The Externship Process
Access Veterinary Care offers externships throughout the year. We generally only accommodate one (max two) extern at a time to ensure you’re getting the most out of the experience.
Once you fill out the form, we’ll reach out to you to confirm availability and schedule your dates.
A couple of weeks before your externship, we’ll send you an email with your specific schedule.
While Access is primarily an urgent care center, we do offer surgeries (dental, mass removals, and non-scheduled/urgent surgeries), limited chronic disease management, and a vaccine-style preventative care clinic. We also host traveling specialists who perform orthopedic surgeries and diagnostic ultrasounds when needed. Schedules are made taking your preferences into consideration and with the intent to get you as much hands on experience as we can!
General Information for Arrival
Dress Code:
We don’t have restrictions on tattoos, piercings, hair color, etc. Please feel free to be you! Please just wear close-toed-shoes and scrubs. Lab coats are also not required, but if you want to wear one, you certainly can.
Parking:
We have an employee lot to the right of the clinic and a client lot to the left. Externs are welcome to park in either spot. There is an emergency lane (marked in yellow paint) on the employee side, we just ask that you keep that lane clear.
Lunch:
We have a breakroom with a fridge, microwave, toaster oven, air fryer, and coffee machine, so you are welcome to pack your own lunch. If you prefer to get your lunch off property, Access is close to a lot of great food options. Almsted’s market is also right across the street if you’re looking for small supermarket items, or want to take advantage of their fantastic hot food bar. There’s also a Hyvee grocery store, Caribou coffee, Dunkin donuts, Subway, McDonalds, and various restaurants within a couple miles of the clinic.
Client Visits:
A laptop will be provided for you to get into our EMR system and to access our exam form system. If you prefer to bring your own laptop, you certainly can. Our support staff will be there to help guide you, and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!
